Our dog friendly holiday cottages are perfect for large families and complete with plenty of outdoor space including a stream-side paddock and a games room in the historic medieval cruck framed barn. Gwanas Fawr is made up of 2 cottages, Ty Trol sleeping 4 and Ty Neuadd sleeping 5. Many of our guests book both cottages together for a family or large group to enjoy time together.
Situation
Situated down a farm track and over a small bridge the entrance to Gwanas Fawr is through a private gate and up the drive to the old tennis court where there is ample space to park plenty of cars. Gwanas Fawr is surrounded by beautiful farmland which boasts breath taking views of Cader Idris and the Snowdonia national park.
A gentle walk down to our stream takes you to a large paddock with a picnic table, deckchairs and lots of space for children and dogs to play, there is also a small games shed in the paddock. Walks up the track behind the house can start from your front door. The night skies are spectacular too as the area is located within a designated international dark skies reserve.
Ty Trol ( Sleeps 4)
Ty Trol is a welcoming historic cottage in a sympathetically converted cart house with an open plan lounge, kitchen and dining area downstairs. Upstairs is a bathroom with bath and shower, one double bedroom and one twin bedroom.
Ty Neuadd (sleeps 5)
This is a spacious cottage sitting inside the walls of an original historic medieval hall complete with a large open plan lounge, kitchen and dining area with space for a large group to dine. Upstairs there is a bathroom with bath and shower, one double bedroom, one twin bedroom and one single bedroom.
Both cottages are next to each other and have large and cosy log burning stoves and central heating.
Historic medieval barn
There is also a medieval long barn opposite the cottages which has table tennis, an air hockey table and other games. There is also plenty of storage for bikes and all outdoor equipment. We provide a key to the medieval barn so that all guests can lock away any outdoor equipment during their stay.
Nearby
Although wonderfully secluded Gwanas Fawr is within easy reach of many of North Wales great attractions. There are plenty of great places to eat in and around Dolgellau, the Cross Foxes Inn is 5 minutes away. The market town of Dolgellau and the Mawddach Estuary are 4 miles away and we are easily accessible to the great beaches of Barmouth, Fairbourne and Aberdyfi.
Harlech castle and the Italienate village of Portmeirion are a short drive north. Hikers are spoilt for choice with Cader Idirs on our doorstep and Snowdon a drive away. South of Gwanas Fawr is the market town of Machynlleth with lots of great places to eat, fantastic antique shops and a regular Wednesday market. Just outside Machynlleth is one of Wales’ best mountain bike trails set up by Dan Atherton at Dyfi Bike park within 650 acres of the Dyfi forest.
Gwanas Fawr is the perfect holiday accommodation for a large group whether it be hiking, biking or a family gathering to celebrate a special occasion. Guests have been welcomed to Gwanas since the 13th century when the Knights Hospitallers established an early medieval grange here. Steeped in history recent excavations revealed the site of a roman army marching camp on the hill directly behind us.
